At Lovila, we gold plate our Vermeil jewelry with an extra thick 18-carat gold coating of at least 3 microns, as proven by laboratory testing.
The higher the carat weight and the thickness of the gold layer, the more expensive and valuable the piece of jewelry is.
18 karat gold is known for its warm color, durability and quality, which looks just as shimmering and noble to the naked eye.
Gold vermeil jewelry is also the right choice if you are allergic to metals, as it is made of hypoallergenic materials and is nickel-free.
Gold vermeil is not the same as gold plated jewelry.
The main differences between gold vermeil and gold plated jewelry are the thickness of the gold plating and the base metal used. With traditional gold plating, you usually don't expect a sterling silver base as the base metal, but rather cheaper materials like copper or brass.
Gold plated jewelry has a coating of at least 0.5 microns thick, which is 5x less than gold vermeil. Because the coating is so thin, the gold plating tends to wear off very quickly. Gold vermeil is considered real gold, but by law there must be a layer of at least 10k gold that is 2.5 microns thick.
It is superior to gold plated jewelry in terms of durability, quality and value!
Even if gold-plated jewelry has a layer of gold, this does not necessarily mean that the jewelry is high quality and durable. Due to a lower gold quality and a thinner gold layer, more new purchases are made due to rapid wear and tear. This is where the sustainable aspect of the longevity of gold vermeil comes into its own.
